Code of Ethics
This Code of Ethics sets out the professional and ethical obligations of every AMEK member. It applies to all categories of membership — Full, Associate, Student, and Honorary — and to all contexts of practice: clinical, academic, industrial, research, and consultancy. Compliance with this Code is a condition of AMEK membership. Alleged breaches are subject to the Association’s disciplinary procedures as provided in the AMEK Constitution.
Article 1: Responsibility to Patients and the Public
1.1 Members shall at all times place the safety, health, and welfare of the patient and the public above all other considerations. |
1.2 Members shall promptly report any hazardous condition, defective equipment, or unsafe practice that poses a risk to patients, staff, or the public to the appropriate authority. |
1.3 Members shall not approve, certify, or remain silent about any equipment, system, or procedure they know or believe to be unsafe. |
1.4 Members shall ensure medical devices and health technologies under their supervision are fit for purpose, properly maintained, and operated within their intended use parameters. |
1.5 Members shall respect the dignity, confidentiality, and rights of patients in all interactions, including when handling patient data generated by medical devices. |
Article 2: Competence and Continuous Professional Development
2.1 Members shall practise only within the boundaries of their competence and qualifications, and shall not undertake tasks for which they lack the necessary training or experience. |
2.2 Members shall pursue continuous professional development to maintain and enhance their technical and clinical competencies throughout their career. |
2.3 Members shall clearly represent their qualifications, experience, and capabilities honestly, and shall not misrepresent their credentials or scope of practice. |
2.4 Members shall remain current with relevant standards, legislation, and technological advancements pertaining to health technology and biomedical engineering. |
2.5 Members supervising students or junior engineers bear responsibility for providing proper guidance, ensuring quality of work, and providing a safe learning environment. |
Article 3: Integrity and Honesty
3.1 Members shall be truthful and accurate in all professional communications, reports, technical assessments, and declarations. |
3.2 Members shall not falsify data, fabricate test results, alter calibration records, or misrepresent findings in any technical document or official report. |
3.3 Members shall disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest — including financial, personal, or institutional — to the relevant parties before undertaking an assignment. |
3.4 Members shall not accept gifts, commissions, or incentives that could improperly influence their professional judgement or decision-making. |
3.5 Members shall properly acknowledge the intellectual contributions of colleagues, students, and other professionals in any publication, report, or presentation. |
Article 4: Responsibility to the Profession and AMEK
4.1 Members shall conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the dignity and public esteem of the medical engineering profession. |
4.2 Members shall support the objects of AMEK and contribute actively to the growth, governance, and advancement of the Association. |
4.3 Members shall not knowingly engage in, facilitate, or remain silent about conduct that brings the profession or the Association into disrepute. |
4.4 Members shall report breaches of this Code by fellow members to the AMEK Disciplinary Committee in good faith and without malice. |
4.5 Members shall not make false, misleading, or malicious statements about AMEK, its leadership, its publications, or fellow members through any channel, including social media. |
Article 5: Responsibility to Employers and Clients
5.1 Members shall act as faithful agents and trustees of their employers and clients in professional matters, subject always to the overriding obligations under this Code. |
5.2 Members shall not disclose confidential information obtained through their professional work without proper authority, except where required by law or where non-disclosure would endanger public safety. |
5.3 Members shall advise employers or clients when a proposed course of action conflicts with safety standards, legal requirements, or this Code, and shall document such advice. |
5.4 Members shall not engage in any form of bribery, kickback arrangement, or corrupt practice in the procurement, supply, or maintenance of medical equipment or health technologies. |
5.5 Members shall deliver professional services with diligence, within agreed timelines, and to the standard reasonably expected of a competent medical engineer. |
Article 6: Fairness and Non-Discrimination
6.1 Members shall treat all colleagues, students, patients, and stakeholders with fairness, dignity, and respect, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, disability, or professional grade. |
6.2 Members shall not engage in, condone, or remain silent about any form of harassment, bullying, intimidation, or discrimination in the workplace or professional setting. |
6.3 Members shall ensure that their professional decisions — including equipment allocation, staffing, and service delivery — are equitable and not influenced by bias or favouritism. |
6.4 Members in leadership or supervisory roles shall promote inclusive participation and equal opportunity within their teams and the Association. |
Article 7: Environmental Responsibility
7.1 Members shall consider the environmental impact of health technologies, including energy consumption, hazardous waste, radiation, and end-of-life equipment disposal. |
7.2 Members shall comply with applicable environmental and occupational health regulations in all aspects of their work. |
7.3 Members shall advocate for sustainable health technology management practices within their institutions and the broader health system. |
Article 8: Enforcement and Accountability
8.1 Any member found in breach of this Code is subject to AMEK disciplinary proceedings in accordance with the AMEK Constitution. |
8.2 Sanctions for breach of the Code may include written reprimand, suspension of membership rights, or expulsion from the Association, depending on the gravity of the breach. |
8.3 Members under investigation retain the right to due process, including the right to be heard, to present evidence, and to appeal any disciplinary decision. |
8.4 AMEK shall publish and regularly review this Code to ensure it remains relevant, comprehensive, and aligned with national law and international best practice in biomedical engineering ethics. |
8.5 Ignorance of this Code is not a defence in disciplinary proceedings. It is the duty of every member to familiarise themselves with its provisions upon joining and whenever it is amended. |
