Chairman's Statement

peterI take this opportunity to welcome you all to this interactive, exciting and informative website of the Association of Medical Engineering of Kenya (AMEK). Having a website makes it very easy for people to find us, read up about us, what we stand for and answer a bunch of questions they have on our Association because everything is online.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all AMEK Members nationally for electing me in the 2015 elections during the Annual General Meeting held at Izaak Walton, Embu on 12th November, 2015. This is an indication of your confidence in me to deliver which I am confident it is possible with a strong and committed team. The elections were very competitive which saw the long serving Hon. Secretary General Symon Mbakah retire against the will of many members. However we requested him to stay in the council to steer the forth coming 5th East African region to be held this year.

I am taking over the AMEK leadership role at a time when our Country is gearing for the Second election after devolution after the constitution that was promulgated on 27th August, 2010. The constitution is very pertinent on health matters and therefore the implementation of the devolved Healthcare system must promote sustainable economic growth and not be a vehicle of promoting narrow and parochial political interests of the ruling elite. It provides for the right to health care services. Chapter four on the Bill of Rights states in Article 43(1a) that every person has the right to the highest attainable standard of health, which includes the right to health care services, including reproductive health care, and in Article 43(2), that a person shall not be denied emergency medical treatment. Article 27(2) guarantees equality and freedom from discrimination, and the full and equal enjoyment of all rights and fundamental freedoms. The Constitution obligates the government to take legislative, policy and other measures to achieve the progressive realization of the rights as guaranteed in the Constitution, including the right to health. In order to efficiently provide quality Healthcare to Kenyan, we truly need equipment and staff to do treatment, consultation, diagnosis, monitoring, administration, maintenance, surgery, etc. The demand of such profiles or professionals has grown a lot over the years. Medical equipment are products that are used for medical, healthcare, therapeutic or remedial purposes. These equipment are used in diagnosis, therapy or surgery of patients. Medical devices or equipment include a wide variety of products varying in complexity and application. We trust the government will enable the Healthcare system to be vibrant and so cause the Nation to be healthy and prosperous too. Teamwork has been one of the bottlenecks in AMEK Administration hence I would ask each and every Member to feel free to participate in the up building of our profession through all the means possible. We really need to assert our position in the Healthcare industry noting that Contemporary medicine cannot work out without technology, and we are the Technology masters at their disposal in line with our Motto: "Strengthening healthcare technology through appropriate technology". This is why my team and I have taken the initiative to strengthen the Regional Representatives according to the former provincial structure and to co-opt some members to the five Sub- Committees that would ensure AMEK runs smoothly and addresses all issues raised. In due course you will get to know who these additional officials are.

Looking at the past shortly, I thank the previous office led by the immediate past chairman Peter Matoke for realizing so many activities within a short stint such as the initiation of the Biomedical Engineering Bill, the Scheme of Service of Biomedical engineering that was last revised in 1994 and among others that will be occasionally mentioned in this platform. It is my prayer that I will fit the shoes that I am taking over from. The incoming office please prepare well for work a head requires a lot of commitment and dedication. The Executive members Team; Patrick Chepkonga

(Vice Chairman), Paschal Njoka (Hon. Secretary General), Sellah Aseso (Assistant Treasurer, Salome Mwaura (Hon. Treasurer), Amos Mamati (Assistant Treasurer) and Annarose Gitau (Women representative). The council members, Khalif Dekow, Nelson Kariuki, Wilfred Masanga, Pater Matoke and Symon Mbakah. I urge we work as a Team to see AMEK rise above all and make it a bench mark for others.

I also take this earliest opportunity to invite you to the 5th EA Regional Conference that will be held in Sports view Kasarani, Nairobi under the chairmanship of Symon Mbakah, our Affliate members Uganda, Tanzania , Rwanda and Burundi, that is Federation of East Africa Hospital Engineers Associations (FEAHEA) are highly welcome as well as International Federation of Hospital Engineers (IFHE)

On behalf of the Council of AMEK, I wish you all peace, good health and prosperity during the rest of the year.

The AMEK website welcomes articles, contributions, suggestions and feedback. Thank You and May God Bless Kenya.

EDWARD MATEKWA
